Here is the Focus on the Beer list of the top 10 beer spots in the Colorado Springs area. We are starting at #10 and working our way down to #1 in the upcoming weeks. The rest of the Top 10 can be found here. Let us know what you think!

#7 Beer Spot of Colorado Springs: Coaltrain Wine and Spirits
Nestled almost under I-25 next to a 7-11 is the most well stocked liquor store of microbrews and hard to find beers in Colorado Springs. You might be saying, "Hey wait a minute, how can a liquor store be in the top 10?" Well, we believe that sometimes instead of heading to your favorite beering hole for a barley pop, why not bring the beer home and save a few bucks. Coaltrain has been in operation since 1981 providing some of the best selection of wine, spirits, and beer in Colorado.

The Beer: This is the reason Coaltrain made the list. They have a back wall of coolers filled with an impressive amount of 6-packs that include microbrews from many many Colorado
breweries. Notable microbrews from the rest of the US are also represented including six packs from Stone, Dogfish Head, Rogue, Victory, Alaskan, Lagunitas, Firestone Walker, Big Sky, North Coast,  Anderson Valley and others. You can also find many German and other foreign beers.

The best gem of Coaltrain is their isle jammed with bombers and specialty beers. This is where you will find hard-to-get Belgian beer, seasonal bombers and cork and cages from Avery, Great Divide, Stone, Lost Abbey, Russian River, The Bruery, Odell, and Boulevard to name a few. Sometimes you may get lucky and find a Cantillon beer or a Pliny the Elder. Speaking of Pliny, their website even tells you when they have Pliny the Elder in stock! It's pretty easy to spend more time and money than you anticipated when exploring the shelves in this isle so consider yourself forewarned!

Coaltrain is also pretty good about trying to get a beer in stock that you're looking for, if it can be distributed to Colorado if you ask nicely. Kegs can also be purchased. The prices on the beers are not the cheapest in town, but you will not find a better selection or knowledgeable staff than here.

Finally, Coaltrain puts together some amazing beer dinners with local eateries including the Warehouse and The Blue Star. The most recent beer dinner featured 10 beers from Dogfish Head Brewery paried with four courses at The Blue Star!

The Food: Nope, it's a liquor store. But they do organize awesome food dinners.

The Atmosphere: Always organized and clean, Coaltrain uses it's smaller space to its full advantage. Every isle and shelf is packed with beer, liquor, and wine. The staff is friendly and very knowledgeable about beer, especially Austin and Nels. Some staff know more about wine but they can usually find one of their coworkers who knows beer if you have a question. The location is very convenient right off the Uintah exit of I-25. The exterior isn't too impressive, but you'll be glad you stopped by once you see the beer selection!

Overall: Coaltrains delivers the best selection of microbrews, Belgian beer, and bombers in Colorado Springs. The staff know their beer, and the service is great. If you want to create your own beer spot at home, look no further than supplying your beer cellar with beer from Coaltrains.
