Brew Love: Founders Rübæus

College can be a wonderful thing. All the lessons to be learned and books to be read. Wait, where did you go to school? For us, the biggest take away from college ended up being the people that we met. After four(or nine) formative years, diplomas are issued and people move away. While it seems like a bummer at the time, that's actually a good thing! Why? Well, it's really nice when people spread out all over the country because they have access to amazing things you can't get … like beer. Our buddy from Fort Lewis College, Jared, sent us a shipment of really fun beer he could get in Chicago, so naturally this weeks' Brew Love is from that package.Founders Rübæus, described on the bottle as a "pure raspberry ale" looks more like fizzy juice as it cascades out of the bottle into our Saison Rendezvous tulip. One quick sniff and my brain is still trying to figure out if this is actually beer. The flavor directly follows the aroma, bursting with ripe raspberries and a hint of tart bitterness. At only 15 IBU's, Rübæus is through and through a fruited beer, although at 5.7%ABV it definitely packs some punch(pun intended). In what seemed like absolute foolishness, I paired this beer with spicy homemade Indian butter chicken, and despite each capsaicin-filled bite, the flavor of raspberry shines through. Too bad I only had one bottle. If you ever find yourself in Grand Rapids, make sure you stop by Founders because they make amazing beer. I have to say, it's brew love!
