After Five Years, Metric Looks Towards New Horizons

In only five years, Metric Brewing has morphed from Iron Bird 2.0 into a bastion of quality in Central Colorado Springs. Thanks to leadership in brothers Morgan and Chase Perry, along with a stellar staff, Metric has everything in order as they prepare for their next big mission. But first, they’ll celebrate their fifth birthday.

Back in 2018, Metric was born out of a side project for then-owners of Iron Bird Brewing, Mike Centanne and Aaron Celusta along with Chase Perry who was heading up Bristol’s laboratory. Celusta and Centanne both bowed out of the project early on, but the Chase brought his brother Morgan on board and the Perry brothers took the opportunity and ran with it.

Combining Chase’s brewing creativity and Morgan’s marketing/multimedia genius, Metric has set themselves apart from all the other breweries in Colorado Springs. Their social media and marketing is not just announcements of trivia, events and beer releases, but a collective artistic outlet for their team.

Week in and week out, Metric cranks out new and interesting beers, and their fans clamor for more. We’ve long enjoyed every release of No Pulp, and look forward to the return of fan favorites like Mom Jeans and Florida Man. The “no flagships” model is something that’s being used at a few places here in the Springs, but Metric does it in their own unique way and to great success.

I stopped by Metric on a quiet Tuesday to chat about the past five years, watch some cleaning happen and learn more about their anniversary and plans for the future. During my visit, Metric was taking their new slushie machine for a maiden voyage, fresh for the anniversary party—one of many new things.

Speaking to Britta Benson, a long-time Metric employee, I asked what she felt made Metric so successful over the past five years.

“Honestly, Chase's consistency with our beer is super solid. Since we don’t have flagships, every beer is different, but we do bring back a lot of the fan favorites, so I think that really helps people know they can find a new favorite each time they come in. Also, Morgan does such a great job with our social media pictures and our merch. I think that makes a huge difference—it’s a big draw for people seeing the creativity with each new release.”

As for the Anniversary party, Metric is prepping six beer releases along with the aforementioned slushies. Everything from a La Folie-inspired Cherry Golden Sour to a Tangelo Saison will be available, and attendees can also purchase some special edition Dog-stronaut glassware to go with their beer.

What’s next for Metric?

Chase made it clear that the next step for Metric Brewing would be to expand into a new location that would not only fit their brewing needs but also fit who Metric is at this point. They’re not going to settle for anything less than a perfect fit, though.

“We want to own it, but it needs to be in the right neighborhood because we want to stay as local as we can.”

Chase also talked about moving to a larger brewing system when they do expand, setting the scene for Metric to can their beers and provide more options for external keg sales.
