Beers Made By Walking celebrates 10th anniversary June 4
COLORADO SPRINGS, May 5, 2022—Ten years ago the UCCS Galleries of Contemporary Art (GOCA) commissioned artist Eric Steen to launch the first Beers Made By Walking (BMBW) — a program that invites brewers to go on nature hikes and urban walks and make new “place-based beers” inspired by plants from the trail. One June 4, from 2:00pm - 4:00pm, GOCA is bringing BMBW back to Colorado Springs to tap four local beers for a special 10th anniversary beer event at GOCA downtown, Plaza of the Rockies, 121 S. Tejon, Suite 100. Tickets are limited and available for purchase now.
At the end of last summer, brewers from Atrevida Beer Co.,Cerberus Brewing, Goat Patch Brewing, and Local Relic Artisan Ales hiked in Sondermann Park. Led by the Catamount Institute — a non-profit dedicated to developing ecological stewardship through education and adventure — and the Fall Creek Brewshed Alliance, the brewers learned about the edible and medicinal native plants, invasive plants and the local watershed. The four breweries have made beer inspired by what they learned on the hike.
“Colorado Springs is where Beers Made By Walking came to life; the mountainous landscape and high desert flora made the perfect jumping off point for the program,” said Eric Steen, founder of Beers Made By Walking. “The project has grown so much in ten years and it feels great to bring it back home. On our hike we identified a wide variety of native and non-native plants, I’m really excited to see what the brewers have come up with.”
The event will begin at 2:00pm with an artist talk by Eric Steen. Beers will be served following the talk. Tickets are $25 and include limited-edition glassware and pours from each beer. The list of beers include:
Atrevida Beer Co. - American Amber with sunflower seeds, currants and junipers complemented by a medley of Galena, Perle and Northern Brewer hops.
Cerberus Brewing - A vibrant farmhouse ale with red currants and chokecherries aged in a Sherry-finished bourbon barrel.
Goat Patch Brewing - Wheat beer that meshes the bold, earthy flavors and aromas of mullein with the delicate fruitiness and playful pink color of prickly pear cactus.
Local Relic Artisan Ales - Saison aged 8 months in a first use Axe and the Oak bourbon barrel, rested on prickly pear. All malt and hops are Colorado-grown.
About Beers Made By Walking
Beers Made By Walking is a program that invites people to step outside and see the place they live in a new light. We invite brewers to take nature walks and make beer inspired by the plants identified on the trail. Since 2011, we have worked with more than 200 breweries throughout the country and have raised tens of thousands of dollars for non-profit organizations. Our hiking and tasting events act as educational programs for institutions and environmental organizations in the regions we serve. More information at beersmadebywalking.com
